The watermelon is a large fruit with a green rind and sweet, red flesh. It is about 92% water, which makes it one of the very few foods whose name is also a nutritional label.[1] Botanically it is a berry, of a kind called a pepo, with a hard rind, putting the watermelon in the same category as the banana and not, as might be expected, the water.
In Japan, growers produce square watermelons by growing them inside glass or plastic boxes, so that the fruit fills the box and takes its shape. They were first made to fit neatly into fridges, but are mostly sold as expensive decorations, often picked before they are ripe.[2] A square watermelon is the only fruit that has been asked to become a cube and has agreed.
Seedless watermelons are not grown from nothing. They are grown from seeds of a special hybrid, whose fruits produce only small, soft, white undeveloped seeds. Growers must plant ordinary watermelons nearby to provide pollen. The seedless watermelon therefore needs a seeded watermelon to exist at all, which it has never thanked.
