Blue is the colour of the sky, the sea and every bathroom ever painted by someone who wanted it to feel “calm”.[1]

The sky is blue because of the way sunlight scatters in the atmosphere. Before this was discovered, the leading theory was that the sky simply preferred it.

Feeling blue

People who feel blue do not turn blue. People who turn blue should not be reading this article and should be breathing.[2]

Ancient blue

Several ancient languages had no word for blue. Historians believe this caused considerable confusion when describing the sky, which was referred to as “up” and left at that.
