A lighthouse is a tall house that is mostly light and hardly any house. It stands next to the ocean and shows ships where the land is, so that they can go somewhere else.[1]

Purpose

A lighthouse is the only building in the world whose entire job is to tell people to go away, and it does this politely, every ten seconds, all night.

Keepers

Lighthouse keepers once lived in lighthouses and kept the light going. Most lighthouses are now automatic, and the keepers have been replaced by a timer and a lamp, which are better company but worse at cards.[2]
