The Sun is the star at the centre of the Solar System, which it named after itself. It has risen in the east every single day on record, a streak that experts have described as “impressive”, “unbroken” and “frankly suspicious”.[1]
From Earth the Sun looks like a bright circle. You should not look directly at it, which is why nobody is entirely sure.
At night the Sun is not visible. For centuries it was believed to be resting; it is now known to be busy being daytime somewhere else, where it is equally unappreciated.[2]
The Sun could fit about 1.3 million Earths inside it. It has never tried, and astronomers would like it to keep not trying.
