Windmill

A windmill in a field, waving at nobody in particular.

A windmill is a tall building that waves at everyone all day and has never once been waved back at properly.

Telegraph pole

A telegraph pole, holding something up.

A telegraph pole holds up wires that have not carried a telegram in years. Nobody has told the pole.

Stilts

A pair of stilts, resting between heights.

Stilts are a way of being tall that can be taken off, which is more than giraffes can say.

Waterfall

A waterfall, falling, as it has been for some time.

Water at the top of a waterfall has no idea what is coming; water at the bottom has opinions.

Great Wall of China

A section of the Great Wall of China, continuing over a hill because stopping was never discussed.

The Great Wall of China is a wall that kept going for about two thousand years, mostly uphill.

Giraffe

A giraffe, shown at full height because it would not crouch.

A giraffe is so tall that the weather at its head is reported separately from the weather at its feet.

Stalactite

A stalactite, hanging on.

A stalactite is a rock that grows down from a cave ceiling, holding on tight, and waiting for a stalagmite that is taking its time.

Ceiling

A ceiling, photographed from directly below by someone lying down.

A ceiling is the floor of the room upstairs, used upside down so that only flies walk on it.

Stalagmite

A stalagmite, growing (not visible at this shutter speed).

A stalagmite grows upward about a centimetre a century, and has no plans for when it gets there.

Bookshelf

A bookshelf, with the books arranged to look read.

A bookshelf stores books in order of how clever they make you look, not the order you read them.
