A nap is a short sleep taken during the day. It is a sleep that has been told it must be back by four, and almost never is.[1] Most naps are taken in a chair by people who sat down for “just a minute”.

Duration

The ideal nap lasts twenty minutes. The average nap lasts two hours and ends with the napper unsure what day it is, who they are, and why the room is so dark.[2]

Resting one's eyes

Whether resting one's eyes counts as a nap remains disputed. People found resting their eyes insist that they were awake throughout and heard every word, but are unable to say what any of the words were. Naps taken during a meeting are classified, by long tradition, as “listening carefully”.

Regulation

The Society for Short Sleeps defines a nap as any sleep the sleeper intended to be short. Intentions must be declared in advance on Form N-1, a six-page document which is now the leading cause of naps at the Society's headquarters.[3]
