Friday is the day of the week after Thursday, which has spent its entire existence being almost Friday. Friday, by contrast, has spent its entire existence being exactly Friday, and is said to be quietly smug about it.[1]

Friday can be detected from as early as Tuesday afternoon, usually by whoever sits nearest the window. By Thursday evening it can be detected by everyone, including people who do not work on Fridays.

When Friday begins

The start of Friday is the subject of one of the longest-running disputes in calendar studies.[2]

  • The Strict School holds that Friday begins at midnight on Thursday, as written in the calendar.
  • The Afternoon School holds that Friday begins at 3 pm on Thursday, “in spirit”.
  • The Lunch Revisionists hold that Friday begins whenever someone first says “Well, Friday then”, and that this has been getting earlier since 1971.
  • A fourth school, which held that Friday begins on Monday, was dissolved for morale reasons.

Duration

Friday is 24 hours long, the same as Monday. However, it is followed by the weekend, which is two days long and yet somehow shorter than Friday. Physicists have described this as “the only known case of 48 being less than 24”, and have asked for the weekend to be studied more closely, ideally on a weekday.[3]
