Saturday is the day after Friday and before Sunday, and the first day of the weekend. It is exactly 24 hours long, the same as every other day, but has been measured by the public at an average of 9 hours 40 minutes, the shortfall being widely attributed to a lie-in.[1]

Saturday is the only day of the week named after a planet, a fact it brings up often. The other days were named after gods and the Moon, and privately consider Saturday a bit of a show-off.[2]

Duration

Officially, Saturday lasts exactly as long as a Tuesday. A 2011 survey of 4,000 people found that Saturday is 61% shorter than Tuesday. The researchers repeated the survey on a Tuesday and it took the whole day.[3]

The Saturday morning is the shortest morning of the week. It begins at about 10:30 and ends, by most accounts, at about 10:45.

Chores

Saturday is traditionally set aside for chores. Chores are traditionally set aside for Sunday. Neither has noticed the other, and the arrangement has held for centuries.

  • Washing the car: planned.
  • Mowing the lawn: discussed at length.
  • Fixing the shelf: postponed to next Saturday, where it joins the shelves of previous Saturdays.
  • Lie-in: completed, with honours.
