Ice

Ice, being cold in the usual way.

Ice is water that got cold and stopped moving, which most water considers giving up.

Icicle

Several icicles, all pointing the same way, as agreed.

An icicle is water that started to drip, thought better of it halfway, and stayed where it was.

Mud

Mud, photographed from a safe distance.

Mud is either wet earth or dirty water, a question that has divided scholars and ruined trousers.

Drizzle

Drizzle, falling, more or less.

Drizzle is rain that hasn’t committed, and is called ‘not really raining’ by 94% of the people it soaks.

Dew

Dew, found at the scene.

A lawn filmed for 300 nights showed a dry lawn, then a wet lawn, and in between, a lawn.

Tide

The tide, out. It will be back.

The tide goes out twice a day and comes back twice a day, and has never once said where it went.

Umbrella

An umbrella, open, in case.

An umbrella is a portable roof that guarantees rain will stop the moment it is opened.

Lake

A lake, staying where it is.

A lake is water that has stopped. A river is still going somewhere; a lake has arrived and won’t discuss it.

Frost

Frost, on something, in the morning.

Each winter night an unseen force crosses the land, coating all in ice. In the morning it is found on the car.

Fog

Fog is a cloud that came down to see what everyone was doing, and now can’t see anything.
