Flagpole

A flagpole, between flags.

A flagpole without a flag is just a pole, and is paid considerably less.

Echo

A place where echoes are kept. Say something.

An echo is a sound that went all the way to a cliff and back, only to tell you what you just said.

Umbrella

An umbrella, open, in case.

An umbrella is a portable roof that guarantees rain will stop the moment it is opened.

Doormat

A doormat, awaiting feet.

A doormat says ‘Welcome’ to everyone who steps on its face, and has never once withdrawn the offer.

Cobblestone

Cobblestones, lying down, as instructed.

A cobblestone is a rock that has been asked to lie down in a row and has done so for four hundred years.

Tide

The tide, out. It will be back.

The tide goes out twice a day and comes back twice a day, and has never once said where it went.

Cone

A cone, point upward, by its own account.

A cone is a circle that kept going upward while getting smaller, until it ran out of circle.

Brown

Something brown, maintaining its brownness.

Brown is the colour every other colour becomes if left in the paint-water jar long enough.

Noon

A clock at noon, briefly.

Noon lasts no time at all, so everyone who has ever said ‘it’s noon’ was wrong by the end of the word.
